Collaboration

The Three Forests Coalition realizes that one of the best ways to get management changes on the ground in the Three Forests is to BE on the ground with the Forest Service and other interested parties; to survey and photograph and talk about conditions, and to make solid proposals. We have proposed several collaborative projects to the Forests (see links below).

Collaboration re: Management of Two Fishlake Allotments. March 2007.The Fishlake NF has accepted our proposal to collaborate regarding changed management of two heavily-overgrazed and damaged allotments on the Beaver Ranger District: Ten Mile and Pine Creek/Sulphurdale. This two-year collaboration was proposed by the Three Forests Coalition as an alternative to litigating an 8-allotment cattle grazing term permit EIS.

Collaborative Installation of Four Cattle Exclosures Inside and Outside an Aspen Burn. April 2007. Grand Canyon Trust has proposed to Manti-La Sal NF a cost-share project to establish four 100’ by 200’ cattle exclosures, two inside and two outside the Horse Creek aspen burn project scheduled for Spring 2007 on the “Moab Face” of the La Sal Mountains. The Forest tends to claim that “the” solution for aspen problems is burning or cutting aspen to stimulate regeneration. Would the aspen do just fine if it wasn’t being eaten by too many cattle and/or elk? These exclosures would help answer that question.

Suggestions to M-LS NF Regarding Wasatch Plateau.Nov.2005: Proposals to the Manti-La Sal NF regarding collaboration, made during the Wasatch Sheep EIS Appeal Resolution phone conferences during November 2005. In December 2005, the Manti-La Sal NF withdrew its Record of Decision and Final EIS for sheep grazing on 31 allotments in response to our appeal, but expressed interest in our collaborative suggestions. We will see if the Forest wishes to engage in collaboration on these allotments.

Two Suggestions to Fishlake NF Regarding Aspen and Reference Areas.Sept.2005: Two suggestions for collaboration provided to Mary Erickson, Fishlake NF Supervisor, in a letter dated 3 September 2005, regarding Collaboration.
